I’ve returned from a week-long trip along Route 20, traveling from Freeport, Illinois to Sioux City, Iowa. These trips are always informative. This one was no exception.
It was great to get this leg photographed as it was an uncompleted link in the middle of what I had previously photographed. I have now photographed along Route 20 from Chicago to Arco, Idaho. Later this year I will complete the western leg from Arco to Westport, Oregon, the western terminus of the road.
In Iowa there are four cities along Route 20 that stand out: Dubuque, Waterloo, Fort Dodge, and Sioux City. They’re similar in size and age, and seeing them in succession made it easier to compare how each city has developed over time. Some differences are subtle; others are more obvious. I will share these with you.
In Illinois The Freeport to East Dubuque leg crosses some pastoral driftless terrain which includes multiple small towns and Historic Galena, Illinois. Future posts will detail these cities and the towns and topography between them.
The weather was hot, with occasional rain. The conditions weren’t ideal for travel, but they made for good skies and wonderful light. It was a great trip. I am thankful.
